There is also a manual available both online and at the Concordia Bookstores called "Introduction to Usenet News and the slrn Newsreader", which is very highly recommended.
Do not ask for help with netnews until you have read both the handout and the manual above!
There are several other newsreaders available on the Alcor system. You may, of course, use one of them, or one of your own; you may even use a Web browser to access newsgroups. However, we recommend that you use slrn, which is the default newsreader in the menu system.
This is a moderated newsgroup to which departments of the University can post important announcements regarding their programs and services. Major announcements concerning Alcor will be posted here. Only authorized staff may post to this group.
This newsgroup is the one to which you should post your questions and reports of possible problems; your fellow users will try to help, and IITS staff members also monitor that newsgroup. But before you do, please check out all the available information in the Alcor Web pages. Answers to questions posted to concordia.dept.iits.help will be posted back to this same newsgroup.
Note that concordia.dept.iits.help is also used for posting questions and answers about other IITS facilities. To make it easier for everyone to spot the Alcor-related articles, please put the word "Alcor" in the subject line of your request for help.
This newsgroup can answer common questions about Unix.
This newsgroup concentrates on issues specific to OSF/1 (now known as "Digital Unix"), the operating system that runs on Alcor.
